Angelina’s Ristorante – Staten Island, NY

Angelina's Ristorante - Staten Island, NY
What I Ordered

Review By: Julianne Di –

When we arrived at Angelina’s I thought perhaps we were no longer in Staten Island but in some Victorian mansion in the deep South. From the outside this place is breathtaking. From its 3 floors and outside seating areas overlooking the water to the service and delicious food, Angelina’s really has the whole package. Once we were seated, our waiter came around with a huge chunk of Parmesan cheese and cut us each off a healthy serving of it while we perused the menu. Being an obsessive cheese lover, it was the perfect way to woo me. And as the dishes kept coming out I fell more and more in love.

Instead of the traditional bread and butter or dipping oil that you get in most Italian restaurants, Angelina’s brings out a dish of Caponata. What?! My favorite! Caponata is a delicious eggplant dish with tomatoes, olives, capers, raisins, and celery and it tastes delicious hot or cold. I loved the creativity already.

For an appetizer, we had the zucchini flowers which were a special that day. For those of you who have never eaten zucchini flowers they are delicious when prepared right. They are literally the yellow flowers that grow from the zucchini plant and Angelina’s stuffed them with goat cheese, dipped them in batter, fried them up and drizzled them with balsamic vinegar. The crunchy exterior with the soft warm goat cheese was like heaven in my mouth. If you have never had zucchini flowers, try them here. They will not disappoint and the deliciousness of the flavors will help you get over that initial shock that you are yes indeed eating a flower. Yeah, it’s weird in the beginning, but believe me, you get over it!

I never eat fish, and in fact this is the first time I have ever ordered a plate of fish for myself (believe it or not!). But something about the flavors described in the menu made me feel like I had to try it. The Salmon Verde had a thin crust of pesto and breadcrumb on a bed of spinach and cherry tomatoes. The fish was moist and succulent and the flavor of the pesto really brought this meal over the top. Not to mention, it was a light and healthy plate with enough food to have dinner again the next day.

I never got to the dessert section because I was here for lunch and did not want to over indulge. But I am definitely coming back for dinner because the servings and plate choices are so tempting and I would love to keep trying more of what Angelina’s has to offer. Not to mention, the experience of eating in a place as beautiful as this one is quite an experience.

I would definitely suggest the next time you are in Staten Island or just passing through to go to Jersey, look up Angelina’s and stop in for a bite to eat. You will not be disappointed.
