Daikokuya - Downtown LA

Soups! I’ve always thought they were boring and kind of a waste of time. The only thing a soup was good for was when you were sick. And even then it’s only because your body rejects all solid foods. sooooo…. it kind of won by default.

I recently took a trip to Little Tokyo in downtown Los Angeles that changed everything. While there I had the opportunity of eating at a ramen noodle shop called Daikokuya. As I approached the restaurant, I noticed a huge crowd waiting outside. An easy way to tell if a spot is authentic is to look at the people. If you’re at an Asian dinner and all the customers look like they’re from the far East, chances are you are about to have your mind “FREAKING BLOWN AWAY!!” Thankfully that’s exactly what I saw. Man, was I excited.

As I made my way through the black curtains in the front of the shop, I was surprised by the amount of people and the smell of pure awesomeness coming from the kitchen. The wait was about 45 minutes, but so worth it.

After sitting with the menu for about a whole 5 seconds, I made a decision. I decided on the Diakoku Ramen. The description in the menu sounded to good to past up and it went something like this:

“We begin the process the day before your meal reaches the table by boiling bones and joints in a large CAULDRON over night. We add our secret soy sauce, boiled chijire style egg noodles, pork belly chashu, marinated boiled egg, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, green onions and sesame seeds.”
They had me at CAULDRON!! I mean seriously, anything made in a cauldron has to be out of this world. And it was. The soup was packed with flavor, the pork was delicious and the egg yolk was oozing out. The tuna sashimi bowl I had as a side complemented this incredible dish so well. What a great spot!!!

The food was really good and the service was fantastic. I’d recommend that everyone check it out. Be prepared for a long wait and they do not accept Credit or Debit, so have your cash ready.
