What I Ordered

Gargiulo’s is a family owned restaurant that has been in Brooklyn for as long as I can remember. In fact, my high school held all of its major after school functions here including the father/daughter dance and mother/daughter luncheon (I should mention I went to an all-girl private school). The restaurant and catering hall has also hosted many bridal and baby showers as well as weddings and any other type of party you can think of hosting. For the most part, the food choices are usually typical Italian from appetizer to dessert and everything in between.
The appetizers here are my favorite because they incorporate everything I love about eating: variety and small portions. The pizzas are bite size Sicilian style and the crust is very airy and light which makes this pizza appetizer so delicious because it is not bogged down with too much sauce or cheese. The rice balls are plain with cheese and I honestly prefer meat sauce and peas in mine (the way rice balls should be). The plain ones are a little dry for my taste. They also have an appetizer called spinach balls which are in the same style as the rice ball only smaller and bite size and they are absolutely delicious. If the waiters only came around with these appetizers for the duration of the meal I would have been absolutely fine with that.
Next is another series of courses which make you feel like you are a Thanksgiving turkey getting stuffed and fattened up for someone else to eat. After a plate of prosciutto with mozzarella and roasted peppers, fried calamari, and eggplant rollatini, I really didn’t think I had room for much else (but I am Italian and when it comes to food, we always find room somehow). Because the portions are so big and intended for sharing I took only small bite size pieces to be polite and to make sure I had enough room for the next few courses. The next course, is a salad. Really though, what am I supposed to do with a salad after being completely stuffed like a pig at a luau? Well, I ate it of course! The salad is delicious and refreshing with some kind of citrus dressing that makes you feel a little healthier after all of the dairy and carbs.
The fusilli was next (more carbs!) and very different from the traditional pasta dishes in Italian restaurants (like marinara sauce or penne a la vodka). On top were pieces of meat, like pork and pancetta and the dish was actually quite good. By the time my next course, the steak, came out I could only eat a few pieces so I didn’t get to enjoy it as much as I would have liked.
You can go to Gargiulo’s and trust that you will have a good meal. But just like any good relationship, “good” can get a little boring and have you looking for a more exciting and exotic place to eat. But, you can always count on Gargiulo’s for a solid and reliable Italian meal.
