We arrived in Milan in the late evening and were leaving first thing in the morning, so we didn’t have much time to experience the city at all. But, at least we figured we’d be able to experience the food. Luckily, Dave’s mom recommended we get some sort of Milanese dish while we were there (Milan = Milanese… Duh, how did we not think of that?).
We headed toward the Duomo determined to find the best Milanese in town. After scouring the area, we went back to one of the first places we saw in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele shopping mall: Gatto Rosso. Now typically, I probably wouldn’t be too keen on eating in a mall, but between the friendly maitre’d, some of the best smelling Italian food ever, and a veal milanese that looked out of this world, we made an exception. There was no question that we had found our spot.
We were seated inside, ordered a bottle of wine, and went through the menu. We hadn’t been planning on ordering pizza until we saw one being delivered to the table next to us. It looked so good that I almost had to ask for a bite even though I immediately knew we’d be ordering our own.
We decided on the Locanda Pizza and of course, the Veal Milanese. The two dishes came out together and I couldn’t even tell you which one looked or smelled better (or which one was bigger, for that matter). Considering the fact that I’d been creepily staring at the people eating their pizza next to us from the time it came out until the time they finished, I thought that I should dig into the pizza first.
I’ve had a lot of pizza in my day, and I’m not kidding when I say this was probably the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life. The crust, the sauce, and the cheese we’re all amazing and omg, my stomach is starting to growl just thinking about it. The veal milanese was great also. It was crunchy, and juicy, and lemony, and really just everything a good milanese should be. By the time we were finished, I was stuffed and sooo satisfied by this great Italian meal.
We left full and happy. The next morning when we looked at the receipt, we thought that we may have been slightly overcharged, but when you’re paying for bread and water, it’s hard to keep track. Either way, it was a great meal at a great restaurant and we felt that we had definitely chosen the right place for our few short hours in Milan.
