Pat’s and Geno’s – Philly

And the winner is...

The two most famous Cheesesteak places in Philly are right across the street from each other. Is it really possible to just try one of them when they make it so easy to get both? For us, clearly the answer was no. Everyone has a favorite, so I needed to know what mine was!

The plan was for me to stand in line at Geno’s, and Dave at Pat’s so that we could try a cheesesteak from each. We anticipated having to wait in a pretty long line, but much to our delight, there was no wait when we got there. I won’t lie, I was a little intimidated by the ordering process, but lucky for me my friend from college who is from Philly was with me. I let her order first so I could see how it was done. Apparently you don’t even need to mention the fact that you’re getting a cheesesteak when you’re ordering. That’s a given. All you have to do is say the ingredients you want on your sandwich, and that’s it. Oh, and all sandwich ordering happens in one line, while drink and side ordering happens in another.

I ordered my cheesesteak “with everything and provolone” (Dave was getting our other sandwich with wiz). I paid and then got in another line to order regular fries, cheese fries, and a diet coke (really healthy meal, I know). I put some hot peppers on the cheesesteak, ketchup and hot sauce on the regular fries, and we met Dave at one of the outdoor picnic tables at Geno’s.

First, I tried the fries. The cheese fries were awesome. Like dangerously good. Do they use the cheesesteak wiz as the cheese for the fries? IDK, but all I can say is wow. The regular fries were great too but whatever the hot sauce was that I added was insanely hot. After eating one fry, my mouth was on fire… So, I stuck to the cheese fries, which was more than ok with me.

After I tried the fries, I took one bite of each cheesesteak. All it took was that one bite and I immediately had my winner. It really wasn’t even a contest in my mind. The cheesesteak from Pat’s was admittedly much greasier, but also in my opinion much yummier.

The only problem is that I’m not sure if Pat’s was better because the actual cheesesteak was better or because it was the cheesesteak with wiz. We should have gotten identical cheesesteaks from both places for this to really be a fair contest. Ugh, damn it! I guess I’ll have to go back for another cheesesteak throw down, but until then… Go Pat’s!
