In Short: The most expensive restaurant in La Concha but by far one of the coolest places I have ever eaten in. The food here is not extravagantly delicious but it is good and service is good as well but it is the experience of eating in a clam shell that made the experience worth it.
Perla is La Concha’s high end restaurant at the hotel and it is one of the nicest themed restaurants that I have ever eaten in. The whole restaurant is architecturally shaped as a clamshell with the restaurant inside the shell. There is a beautiful view of the beach through the glass windows and it lights up at night with blue and purple lights.
For an appetizer I had the red and golden beet salad which had candied walnuts and goat cheese. The salad was lightly dressed and I always think that goat cheese paired with candied walnuts is delicious. I wasn’t too crazy about the beets but the salad as a whole was light, crispy and refreshing. Most importantly, in the humid Puerto Rican weather, it was cold.
When it is hot outside it just feels better to have light meals and the chicken breast stuffed with Serrano peppers and manchego cheese was not too heavy on the stomach and really flavorful. Even the bed of risotto that it rested on was flavorful. All of the components of the dish worked together as a whole, especially the chimichurri sauce at the bottom of the plate. The chicken was lightly breaded and did not taste greasy. The dish incorporated the cheese and peppers of Spanish food with spices like cilantro that made this plate so successful and tasteful.
For dessert, sorbet is a great choice to keep cool in the summer heat. Our coconut and pear sorbet with the almond flavored biscuit was such a good way to end our meal. In fact, I was upset when the coconut sorbet was done because I wanted to keep eating it.
The restaurant was nice and it was a fancy place to enjoy a night out to dress up and eat well with great service. I would recommend the La Perla experience at least once on your trip if you choose this hotel.
We enjoyed great food in an amazing location. I have never enjoyed dinner overlooking the beach from inside a clam shell so it was an interesting experience for me. I would definitely eat here again. But if you try it out, be prepared to spend some money on your meal.
