What I Ordered

Vicolo is a fairly new restaurant in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and we decided to try it because of Groupon. We went on a Sunday for dinner and sat by the windows facing the corner of 86th Ave which made it feel like we were eating outside but in the relief of air conditioning. The location and interior of the restaurant is really nice and if you can get a seat by the windows it’s even better.
We ordered the Antipasto Mediterraneo as an appetizer. It was a great portion for two people and also a great variety of different foods. Everything we had bites of was delicious and it made us excited to receive our entrees as well. Our appetizer plate included eggplant rollatini, which was stuffed with fresh ricotta cheese and topped with tomato sauce and mozzarella. The stuffed mushrooms were also good, drizzled with a pasta sauce and stuffed with a mixture of mushroom and breadcrumb. I am never a big fan of mozzarella sticks but these were very tasty and I enjoyed it enough to almost finish the whole serving. Also included in our appetizer sampler were shrimp and stuffed clams. For me it was the clams that stole the show here because the breadcrumb was crispy and flavored with Parmesan cheese. The crispy breadcrumb with the chewy clam was a texture match made in heaven.
Our Groupon also included a glass of wine each and even the wine that we had was delicious and paired perfectly with our food. The wait staff was great and very helpful if you would like some suggestions as to what wines pair well with your meal. Neither myself or my fiance are wine connoisseurs so they helped us pick out the perfect glasses.
For our meals, we shared the steak and risotto. The risotto was so cheesy and sometimes the taste of mushrooms can get lost in big dishes but not here. I could smell the mushrooms as they put the plate in front of me and if you like mushrooms then you would love this dish because the flavor was powerful. The serving size was so big and what you would expect a serving in an Italian restaurant to be without being too overwhelming (and you have enough to bring to work for lunch the next day, which is always the best). The steak was very juicy and tender, and all I can say is that I’ve never seen my fiancé scarf down a piece of meat so fast. I had to hurry and grab a piece before I missed my opportunity to taste it! What really took my by surprise was the salad that accompanied the steak. The dressing was not too acidic and not too overpowering, it was just right. I thought the greens paired extremely well with this dish.
We really enjoyed our meal here and there are many great options on the menu, even pizza! Also, make sure to take advantage of their great seasonal specials. Next time, I will have to try the Italian cheesecake on their huge dessert menu!
