Ever since moving to New York last year, Dave and I have wanted to check out the Hamptons. Well, this past weekend for our one-year NY anniversary, we finally decided to do it. We got on the first Jitney on Saturday morning (which amazingly picked us up right around the corner from our apartment), and before we knew it, we were on our way. We got to Montauk a little before lunchtime, and decided to do a little shopping before picking a spot to eat.
We asked around for lunch recommendations and everyone seemed to point us in the same direction…Shagwong. We were told that a lot of the places were closed for the winter, but no matter what the season, Shagwong is where all the locals like to hang out. That sounded perfect.
We started out with a bowl of Manhattan Clam Chowder. Between all of our travels this summer alone, we’ve had some amazing clam chowders, but this one was the best of the bunch. The chowder was delicious, and even more importantly, there were huge pieces of clam in every bite, and they were just SO good.
We love baked clams. We pretty much order them everywhere we go, and Shagwong was no different. We asked out waiter how big they were (we wanted to make sure we had enough), and he told us not to worry. Well, he was right. They were huge. And with a little cocktail sauce right on top, these baked clams were amazing.
Then, last but certainly not least, we shared an order of fish and chips. We haven’t had fish and chips in a while, and these made me remember how much I love them. They didn’t taste too “fried” (if that makes sense), but instead, the batter was very crispy, light, and really just perfect. And the fries were awesome too.
We had a perfect lunch (and a perfect day) in Montauk and would definitely recommend Shagwong to anyone headed to the Hamptons!
