I’ve been to The Grey Dog a few times, but this was my first time going for dinner and also my first time in the Chelsea location. Whenever I walk in, I always love the décor and the huge menu hanging behind the counter. As always, I scoured the menu for a good ten minutes before finally deciding on a tuna melt for dinner.
Tuna melts are not a typical order for me at all. When ordering a sandwich, I usually go for a Rueben, a chicken salad, some kind of turkey, or even an Italian sub. I’m not a big fan of celery in my tuna, which is why I don’t order them at restaurants very often. They alllllways come with celery. But, for some reason I was really feeling like a tuna melt on this particular day so I just went for it.
I sat down with my friend at a table in the back of the restaurant and we waited for them to bring our food. When the tuna melt came out, I was amazed at what I saw… and also a little confused. Basically, at first glance, all I saw was the cheese; A big, gooey, delicious mound of cheese. But wait, where was the bread? Did they melt the cheese on top of the bread? Upon further inspection, I realized that the tuna melt was served as an open-faced sandwich…. With two pieces of bread on the bottom. I removed one of the bread slices and placed it on top of that gooey, melty, delicious cheese. And then I noticed something else. But wait, could it be? There was no celery in the tuna!!!
I took my first bite and quickly realized that this was probably the best tuna melt I’ve ever had. No, not probably, it WAS the best tuna melt I’ve ever had. The bread was perfectly toasted, there was just the right amount of cheese (a lot), and the fact that there was no celery in the tuna… well, I felt like this tuna melt was made just for me.
Now, I just can’t believe I’ve waited all this time to go to Grey Dog for any meal other than breakfast. I will most definitely be back for that tuna melt (and to try all of their other amazing sandwich combinations) very soon.
