What I Ordered
Insalata Arugula E Noci
In Short: Delicious authentic Sicilian dishes that made me feel like I was back in my hometown of Carroll Gardens Brooklyn surrounded by familiar accents and amazing food!
First and foremost, at Zio Toto Ristorante Italiano, they bring a basket of bread to the table as soon as we walk in- and not just any bread, foccaccia bread. Not just any foccaccia bread but the one with breadcrumbs and onions on it! My favorite style pizza in a mini foccaccia bread! It was delicious; so delicious that when the bus boy refilled the basket I could not control myself and ate a whole bunch of bread like a wild beast. For those of you who have no idea what pizza I am talking about it is called Sfincione and it is a Sicilian style pizza with tomato sauce, caramelized onions and breadcrumbs. It is the most delicious pizza and my favorite. I haven’t seen authentic delicious Sicilian foods that I grew up with since Carroll Gardens Brooklyn gentrified but Zio Toto’s really filled the void.
I came here with my husband and parents after visiting Staten Island we decided to stop for dinner on a Saturday night. The service here was great, the wait staff was friendly and accommodating. We happened to come in when the state was doing an inspection but the waiters were great about it and tried to get the food out as quickly as possible. For appetizers we had caponata, an eggplant dip/salad with olives, capers, tomato sauce, a delicious combination of salty and little bit sweet and the versatility to be eaten hot or cold. The caponata here was okay- my biggest complaint was that I would have liked to see more olives in it but it is still tasty even though I’ve had better. I also split an arugula salad with my mom which was delicious. From the light citrus vinaigrette to the shaved Parmesan on the top, I was in salad heaven. That was a dish that wasn’t difficult for us to polish off together- that is for sure. The fried calamari was delicious as well, so crispy and light I didn’t feel that heavy fried food feeling.
My spiedini was delicious. For those of you who don’t know what that is, it is veal cutlets stuffed with breadcrumbs, raisins, and other stuff, and then put on a skewer dipped in egg and breadcrumb and fried to delicious crispy perfection.
This place was so delicious that I would definitely come here again! I was so full on carbs and nostalgia that I didn’t even have room for dessert.
